Twinkling

A wind-powered,
kinetic art installation system reusing old CDs
(2016)

Like a string instrument played by the wind, Twinkling is a system for kinetic, shimmering sculptures. These are constructed from upcycled CDs suspended on thin cables to form wavy surfaces that continuously sparkle while vibrating in the wind. Developed with a custom algorithm, the installation's shape and size can be easily modified to adapt to different sites. The dynamic reflections created by the CDs can exploit the available light, whether it is sunlight or artificial lighting, producing visually engaging effects with minimal energy use.

An example was installed in Great St. Mary's Church garden in Cambridge, England during e-Luminate Cambridge festival 2016.
