Shade of Light

A solar-powered luminous pavilion
from plastic waste
(2015)

Shade of Light is a concept for a luminous pavilion system consisting of a reciprocal shell structure designed with Format Engineers. It is covered by a skin made of upcycled CDs and solar-powered LED lights which are partly fabricated from plastic waste. The integrated solar cells absorb sunlight during the day to power the glowing LED lights at night. In the daytime the pavilion provides shade with colourful reflections. By combining a cutting-edge design with solar power and upcycled components, Shade of Light is aimed at inspiring people to rethink their habits around waste and energy use. Shade of Light is to be created through public engagement, as people from local communities can contribute to its construction with selected items from their everyday plastic waste.
